Our Team Reflects In Honor Of International Women's Day

As we reflect on the positive impacts of the women both in history and in our lives on this International Women’s Day, we remember the quote following quote: “I come as one, I stand as 10,000”. We are using today as an opportunity to thank and honor the women who have come before us, as we encourage all of you to do. These women showed us the importance of staying true to your authentic self and left room for us to do the same.

In honor of today’s holiday, we have asked our staff member, Jayme, to share about one of her prominent female role models.

“There are so many women who come to mind when I think about those who have had an impact on my life. It’s hard to pick just one, but it feels appropriate to share about the one who had the earliest impression on me. Oprah.

There was nothing like coming home from school, grabbing a snack, and watching The Oprah Winfrey Show with my mom. I’ve always hated small talk for as long as I can remember. Unless we are getting down to the real stuff, I don’t want to talk about it. Oprah’s talk show spoke my language. She asked the real questions, the painful questions, and she got down to the root of it - whatever subject she and her guests were discussing. She provided a space for people to tell their stories honestly and powerfully.

In a recent podcast interview with Tracee Ellis Ross, Oprah describes her experience the first time she saw Tracee’s Mother, Diana Ross, on television. She recalls the moment fondly and says Diana “planted the seed inside me that something else was possible for my life”.

Watching her show had planted a similar seed inside me. Even though I had no plans of hosting my own talk show one day, it proved to me what it looked like for a woman to hold her ground, and not back down from the real, important, and difficult questions of what it truly means to be a human.

Every honest conversation allows space for people to be more themselves. Every time someone tells their story it shows us all that we are not alone.

I am constantly listening and learning from others and picking up pieces of their story that make me feel inspired or less alone. I strive to live my life in a way that allows me to do that for others, just like Oprah does.”
